Background of the Study

The integration of digital learning tools in nursing education has transformed how students access and retain knowledge. Among these tools, podcasts have gained prominence as an accessible and flexible medium for supplementing traditional learning methods (Martins et al., 2023). Podcasts provide nursing students with audio-based content on critical topics such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinical skills, allowing for learning on-the-go (Adeyemi & Johnson, 2024).

In Nigeria, nursing education often faces challenges such as limited access to updated learning materials, inadequate faculty resources, and high student-teacher ratios. In Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, students may struggle to keep up with coursework due to these challenges. Podcasts offer a potential solution by providing an additional learning resource that is engaging, self-paced, and easily accessible (Ogundipe et al., 2024). This study evaluates the effectiveness of podcasts in supplementing nursing education and their impact on student engagement and retention.

Statement of the Problem

Traditional nursing education relies heavily on textbooks, lectures, and clinical practice. However, these methods alone may not be sufficient in an era where students require more interactive and engaging learning formats (Williams & Hassan, 2024). Many nursing students in Bayelsa State struggle with information overload, time constraints, and difficulties in retaining complex concepts.

Despite the availability of digital learning tools, the adoption of podcasts in nursing education remains limited. There is a need to assess whether podcasts can enhance student engagement, improve content retention, and supplement traditional learning methods. This study explores the role of podcasts in improving nursing education outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of podcasts in supplementing nursing education.
  2. To examine student engagement and knowledge retention when using podcasts.
  3. To identify challenges in the adoption of podcasts in nursing education.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are podcasts in supplementing nursing education?
  2. What impact do podcasts have on student engagement and knowledge retention?
  3. What are the challenges associated with podcast adoption in nursing education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Podcasts do not significantly improve nursing education outcomes.
  2. Podcasts have no significant impact on student engagement and retention.
  3. There are no significant challenges associated with podcast adoption in nursing education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery. Limitations include variability in students’ access to digital devices and internet connectivity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Podcasts: Digital audio files used for educational purposes.
  • Student Engagement: The level of interest and participation in learning activities.
